Common Home Security Mistakes

Tuesday, 20 January 2009 03:24 by admin

 Hide-a-key

Many homeowners, afraid they will lose their keys and lock themselves out, choose to hide a key somewhere on the property. They think they are being sneaky by placing the key under a rock, under a doormat, in a potted plant, or above the door. Burglars absolutely know about all these commonly used hiding places.

Broken Locks

Some homeowners neglect to fix broken locks right away, putting the job off for tomorrow. It is important, however, to make sure all your doors and windows have strong modern locks that are in good repair.

Burglar Alarms That Aren't Turned on

A home security system is only useful when updated and activated. Test your alarm on a regular basis and check for any upgrades to the software. And don't forget to turn it on when you leave the house, even if you're just planning to run an errand.

Untamed Landscaping

Burglars love to hide behind bushes and shrubbery; don't give them that opportunity. Keep the foliage trimmed, especially around the house, and make sure all the outdoor lights are in good working order.

Unlocked Storage Sheds

If you have a storage shed, make sure you keep it locked at all times, because otherwise you're offering thieves free use of all your tools which can certainly help them figure out a way into your home.

Keys in the Car

It's bad enough if you leave your car unlocked (you shouldn't, even in the garage), but never leave a set of house keys in the car.

Security Alarms

Tuesday, 20 January 2009 01:41 by admin

Having a security alarm system may decreases the chances of a burglary. Even if the alarm system does not keep a burglar from breaking in, it may cause the burglar to stay a shorter amount of time.

Most systems rely on a combination of contacts placed at doors and windows and motion sensors.

It is best that all exterior potential points of entry have contacts that sense when they are open. Glass break sensors are also available and recommended.

Motion sensors should not be used as the primary means of detection because they do not detect someone until they are already in the house.

The basic elements of a standard home security system include:

  • Control panel: This is where the system wiring terminates, the backup battery is located and where it is connected to the phone lines if it is a monitored system.
  • Keypad: This is where the system is armed and disarmed.
  • Siren
  • Inside motion detector: These sense changes in a room caused by human presence. Special motion detectors are available for people who have pets.
  • Door and window contacts:; This sounds the alarm when the door or window is opened (and the system is on).
  • A central monitoring station : If the system is monitored, and the alarm is set off, the control panel sends a message to a central monitoring station, which is manned 24 hours a day.

After attempting to contact the homeowner, the central monitoring station will contact the police, fire department, or
    medics.

The Right Security System for You

Sunday, 18 January 2009 22:23 by admin

Every minute of the day, homes across the United States are broken into. Burglars are increasing in numbers and in knowledge. No one should feel scared or unprotected in the privacy of their own home. In this twenty first century true safety and security can only be provided through a high quality alarm system.

Those looking for a great alarm system will learn that there are so many different companies that can provide great alarms and great service. When searching for the right security system you will want to choose a system with 24 hour monitoring. Although virtually standard now-a-days, it’s important to make sure before signing anything. This will ensure the protection of not only your home but your family.

With technology constantly improving, security services are offering better and cheaper systems then ever before. The true difference between a good security service and a bad one is the monitoring centers. The best type of alarm packages provides two-way communication with the monitoring centers. If the alarm sounds your house, the monitoring center is alerted. After attempting to contact your home within a given response time, if there is no contact they dispatch the police. Not every company offers this two-way contact with the monitoring centers so be sure you choose your service accordingly. It is never recommended to purchase a security service because it is simply cheap.

Safety in almost any sense of the word should almost always come first. No matter what you purchase you are entitled by law to know exactly what you are paying for and exactly how to use your system. The safety of your loved ones and your personal belongings is the last thing you want to worry about so when choosing your security system, don’t overlook or under estimate what you are paying for and how it works.

Office Security

Sunday, 18 January 2009 22:20 by admin

Installing an office security system is vital to any business today. The protection of a business’ facilities and equipment are crucial to the lifeline of the company. When deciding on what kind of security system to install, there are important considerations to be made. The amount of security your office needs is a major consideration. While analyzing your security needs you must remember that the most important things in your office should be the priority of your protection, no matter what kind system you choose. If external security of the building is a priority then all main entrances should be secure through an access control system. These systems come varied in price and technology from keypads, swipe cards, fingerprint reading, up to retinal scanning .

On the other hand some offices value the internal security of the building. Most office security systems must allow employees access to different parts of the building while still monitoring the potential of threat. However, any good office security system must have a customizable access for different people depending on the level of access each employee is entitled to have. For extremely high areas of security within a perimeter, surveillance cameras are usually the most reliable source. No matter what type of business invests in office protection, properly choosing and programming a security system that is right for the business’ needs is just as important as the assets you are trying to protect. As you can see there are several things to consider when investing in the protection of your office. The type of security system you ultimately choose will have to be one that is best designed to fit the needs of your business and preserve the most valuable components of the facility.

Time For An Upgrade?

Thursday, 15 January 2009 04:12 by admin

Recent studies suggest that homes without alarm systems are three times more likely to be burglarized than homes with alarm systems. Security Systems in today’s world are as important as buckling up when you get in the car. However, the reality is that most people with alarm systems have the basic components and feel that they are safe when this is not the case. Basic components include a keypad, door and window sensors, and motion detectors. While these components offer a great deal of protection for your home, you may want to upgrade your current alarm system with some of the latest in home security technology:

Monitored Smoke Detectors: helps minimize the risk of a fire destroying your home.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors: According to the human senses it impossible to detect because it is colorless and odorless yet extremely deadly. With a detector your exposure to the gas is eliminated.

Glass Break Senses: Simple yet effective. As soon as glass breaks within the home or building the alarm sounds off scaring away intruders before they get in.

Remote Control Key Fobs: Gives you the control of your security system with a touch of one button on your keychain. Can be used to activate and de-activate as you asses the situation.

Driveway Alarm/Alert: Detects and notifies when a guest has pulled into your driveway.

Security Cameras and Surveillance Equipment: Although a bit higher in price, it is always a good investment. Can’t afford it? Consider installing fake cameras around the house. It’s an effective way to scare off intruders before they plan to break in.

Your current alarm system may not be as effective as it once was. Would you go 10 years without tuning up your car? With technology constantly improving, alarm systems are becoming cheaper and more effective. Check to make sure that your home is as safe as you need it to be with the latest equipment you can afford.
